About 45 miles east of Salem, OR, visitors can find a pristine water reservoir called Detroit Lake. This 3,500 acre lake was created in 1953 upon completion of the Detroit Dam. The Dam was created for a number of purposes, such as power generation, water conservation, flood control, and recreation. Recreational uses include camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming.
The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife has stocked the lake with many different types of fish, which make it ideal for a day of relaxing by the waterfront with a fishing pole. Some of the species that reside in the lake are Chinook salmon and bullhead catfish, but the most popular fish in the lake are the rainbow trout.
The lake provides a couple different areas to put your boat in the water and is an ideal place to take your boat during the spring and summer months. Mongold State Park also provides boaters with a long ramp that allows for a boat launch in the winter months.
Detroit Lake is a great place to spend the weekend. Just take Highway 22 east from the Detroit exit in Salem along I-5.
